Alan Kyerematen Wanted Me As His Running Mate But I Turned Him Down — Okyeame Kwame

Renowned Ghanaian musician Okyeame Kwame has disclosed that he was approached by Alan Kyerematen to serve as his running mate for the 2024 general elections.

Alan, founder of the “Movement for Change,” outlined ten criteria for the role, which the artist found both flattering and appealing.

In an interview with Kwame Dadzie on Joy FM, Okyeame Kwame explained that while the offer was tempting, he ultimately declined due to the challenges associated with a political career. He cited concerns about his family’s well-being, security risks, and the potential for propaganda and intense public scrutiny as reasons for his decision.

“He [Alan] reached out while I was in Kumasi for an event. We met, and he outlined certain criteria for his running mate. They wanted someone who had achieved significant milestones, and with my 26 years in the music industry, I fit the bill. They also considered personal attributes like marriage and family,” Okyeame Kwame revealed.

Despite feeling honored, the musician said his family’s welfare took precedence. “My children are teenagers. If I were to enter partisan politics, I’d need at least a year to prepare them for the challenges. There’s also the risk of false propaganda and digging up skeletons. I wasn’t ready to put my family through that kind of pressure,” he said.

Following Okyeame Kwame’s decision, Alan Kyerematen chose 40-year-old lawyer and broadcaster Elijah Kwame Owusu Danso as his running mate. Elijah, who has a background in hip-hop music, brings an artistic touch to his otherwise professional career.

The revelation has sparked interest in the intersection of Ghana’s creative and political spaces, highlighting the growing appeal of influential personalities from non-political backgrounds in shaping the country’s future.
