Bawumia Announces Free Kidney Dialysis for All Patients Under NHIS Starting December 1

Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has made a significant announcement that will bring relief to many Ghanaians suffering from kidney diseases.

Starting December 1, 2024, kidney dialysis will be provided free of charge to all patients under the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS).

This development follows a successful six-month pilot program that offered free kidney dialysis to patients aged 60 and above, as well as those under 18 years. Bawumia shared the news while campaigning in the Old Tafo constituency on Sunday, November 10.

According to Bawumia, the decision to expand the program was motivated by the high cost of dialysis, which is unaffordable for many. “Many people suffer from kidney diseases, requiring dialysis… We initiated a pilot programme six months ago to include dialysis under the NHIS. Now, we’re concluding this pilot programme, and starting December 1, all kidney dialysis patients will be covered for free under the NHIS”.

This move is expected to bring significant relief to individuals and families struggling with the financial burden of kidney disease treatment. The expansion of the NHIS to cover kidney dialysis is a welcome development in Ghana’s healthcare landscape.
