Chaos Erupts At Greater Accra Regional EC Office As Ndc Supporters Protest Election Results

A tense standoff unfolded at the Greater Accra Regional Office of the Electoral Commission (EC) today, as supporters of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Weija Gbawe constituency besieged the premises.

The NDC supporters were protesting the declaration of the NPP’s Jerry Ahmed Shahid as the winner of the 2024 parliamentary election in the constituency.

The protesters, who were adamant that their candidate had won the election, demanded that the EC declare their candidate the winner.

The situation quickly escalated, with the agitated supporters hurling stones at the EC’s building and vowing not to leave until their demand was met.

Police officers were deployed to the scene to restore order, and after a tense standoff, they were able to calm the situation. Debris and other missiles thrown during the standoff were still visible around the office premises this evening.

This is not the first time that the Weija Gbawe constituency has been at the center of controversy in the post-election period.

For over 48 hours after polls closed, collation was still ongoing, sparking outrage among NDC supporters who felt that the delay was unfair.

The situation came to a head when NDC supporters took over the collation centre and overpowered the police.
