Detroit-based rapper Dank Demoss has filed a multimillion-dollar lawsuit against Lyft after being denied service by a driver who cited her size as the reason.
The incident occurred when Demoss, who weighs 489 pounds, attempted to book a Lyft ride but was told by the driver that she was too large for his Mercedes-Benz sedan and advised to order a larger vehicle like an Uber XL. A video of the encounter, shared by Demoss on social media, quickly went viral, fueling widespread conversations about weight-based discrimination.
In response, Lyft apologized, describing the driver’s behavior as “unacceptable.”

However, Demoss’ legal team claims the company has not taken adequate measures to prevent such discriminatory practices, which are prohibited under Michigan law.
The lawsuit not only seeks damages for the emotional distress caused but also calls for systemic changes to ensure accessibility and inclusion in ride-sharing services.
The case has divided public opinion, with some supporting Demoss’ stance against discrimination, while others argue the driver acted within his rights due to potential safety concerns.
Experts suggest this lawsuit could pave the way for greater scrutiny of accessibility policies in the transportation industry, highlighting the need for a more inclusive system for riders of all sizes.
As the case unfolds, it holds the potential to redefine industry standards for combating weight-based discrimination, emphasizing equity for all passengers regardless of physical attributes.
