President John Mahama has addressed rumors surrounding the cancellation of the E-Levy and betting taxes, stating that he cannot abolish them as previously promised.
Instead, Mahama plans to rationalize these taxes to alleviate their burden on Ghanaians.
In a video that has gained significant traction online, President Mahama explained that the former government, led by Nana Addo, secured funding from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) to support Ghana’s economy.
The E-Levy and betting taxes are being used to repay this loan, making it impossible for Mahama to cancel them outright.
Mahama had previously vowed to abolish the E-Levy and betting tax if elected. However, the reality of Ghana’s economic situation has forced him to reassess his stance.

Despite this, Mahama has assured Ghanaians that his administration will work tirelessly to reduce and rationalize these taxes. This move aims to minimize their impact on citizens while still fulfilling Ghana’s obligations to the IMF.
As Mahama begins his second term, Ghanaians will be watching closely to see how he navigates the country’s economic challenges.
The rationalization of the E-Levy and betting taxes will be a key aspect of his administration’s efforts to promote economic growth and alleviate financial burdens on citizens.
