A fire has ravaged the Ayensuano District Office of the Electoral Commission (EC) in Asuboi, destroying all electoral materials and devices used in the just-ended elections for the Ayensuano constituency.
The arson attack, which occurred on an unspecified date, remains a mystery, with authorities yet to determine the identities of the perpetrators or their exact motives.
The incident follows a protest staged by a group calling itself the Ayensuano Concerned Youth at the EC office, expressing dissatisfaction over the declaration of Ida Adwoa Asiedu as the Member of Parliament-elect for the constituency.
Mante Gyebi, a spokesperson for the Ayensuano Concerned Youth Association, described the act as unfortunate but distanced the group from the arson.
During the protest, Gyebi issued a five-hour ultimatum to President-elect John Dramani Mahama to intervene in the situation.
Gyebi claimed that the group’s intention was not to cause chaos but to express their discontent with the election results. “We did not go to the EC’s office with the intention to fight, but we went there to inform them that we were not happy with what they did and came back,” he stated.
Meanwhile, the NDC chairman for Ayensuano Constituency, Yabuku Amudu, has expressed worry about the incident and dispelled claims that sympathizers of his party initiated the action. The police were present at the scene, but it remains unclear how the fire started.
Investigations are ongoing, and security has been heightened in the area to prevent further disturbances. The incident has raised concerns about the safety and security of electoral materials and the potential for violence in the aftermath of elections.
