Ghana Is Not Broke, I Have Recovered The Economy Before Leaving Office —Akufo-Addo

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has expressed optimism about Ghana’s economic recovery, stating that the nation’s economy has surpassed initial projections.

In his final State of the Nation Address (SONA) delivered to Parliament on January 3, 2025, the President emphasized Ghana’s resilience in the face of numerous challenges, asserting that the country is not in a state of financial distress.

President Akufo-Addo attributed the progress to strategic government actions, which he believes played a crucial role in restoring economic stability.

He also highlighted the successful completion of three consecutive reviews of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) programme, with the latest review approved on December 2, 2024, resulting in a disbursement of $360 million to support ongoing recovery efforts.

The President’s confidence in Ghana’s economic revival is further supported by the country’s impressive growth rate of 4.7% in the first quarter of 2024, surpassing the IMF’s forecast of 3.1%.

This growth, driven by the industrial sector’s 6.8% expansion and a 4.1% rise in the agricultural sector, underscores the effectiveness of the government’s economic policies.

Reflecting on the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, President Akufo-Addo acknowledged the difficulties faced but underscored the nation’s strong recovery.

He reinforced the government’s commitment to continuing its efforts to strengthen the economy, citing the Ghana CARES ‘Obaatampa’ Programme as a pivotal initiative in the nation’s economic strategy.
