Some Ghanaians online have expressed frustration over costly new smart meters as ECG faces backlash. The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) recently introduced MMS-compliant smart prepaid meters, aiming to cut system losses and improve billing accuracy under its Loss Reduction Programme.
However, many Ghanaians are voicing concerns that these new meters are draining their finances at an alarming rate.
Reports of users spending up to GH¢1,700 monthly on electricity have sparked an outcry, with customers sharing their experiences of frequent trips to ECG offices to buy power, even for modest needs like refrigeration.

Social media users have speculated that the meters were installed as a revenue-boosting tactic, with some noting unexplained deductions from purchased credit.
ECG asserts that the smart meters are intended to improve transparency and reduce energy waste, but many remain unconvinced.
Some customers have resorted to installing grounding wires to reduce consumption rates, hoping to see a return to more manageable bills.
Some noted reactions:
@akwei_nana:
I fix earth wire and I’m not facing problem like this again everything is normal i get AC and other appliances
@iamdzata:
So I bought 200ghs from the App and entered the token directly on the unit. Now when I used the 009 code to check my last purchased credit it says 178.606ghs. They’ve taken 21.394 just like that. This is another thing to check. How much they’re actually crediting you.
