Goaso Chiefs Impose GHS50 Funeral Levy, Sparking Public Debate Online

The Goaso Traditional Council has stirred national discussion after announcing a mandatory GHS50 levy per household to support the funeral rites of the late Goasomanhene, Nana Kwasi Bosomprah.

The directive, which covers every home within the Goaso traditional area, was met with mixed reactions, particularly after a video about the decision went viral.

While some locals see it as a cultural obligation to honor a revered leader, others have expressed frustration, citing economic hardship and questioning the fairness of the flat-rate charge.

Critics online compared the move to council tax in the UK, arguing that such funds should instead support essential services like waste management and infrastructure.

Others called the amount excessive, suggesting GHS10 or GHS20 would have been more appropriate and accessible.

Despite the backlash, the traditional council insists the contribution is necessary to give the late chief a befitting farewell rooted in custom and tradition.

The debate has reignited wider conversations on transparency, tradition, and the financial burdens placed on citizens by local authorities.
