Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, has alleged that former President and NDC flagbearer John Dramani Mahama is backing independent candidates who recently broke away from the NPP.
Chairman Wontumi claims this strategy is aimed at splitting the NPP’s voter base in the Ashanti Region, a traditional stronghold for the ruling party.
In a video shared with MyNewsGH.com during Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia’s campaign stop in the Bekwai Constituency, Chairman Wontumi voiced concerns that Mahama is supporting independent candidates to weaken the NPP’s support.
Addressing a rally of NPP supporters, he detailed an encounter with a candidate who, along with an associate named Kwabena Nyame, allegedly visited him with a bottle of Schnapp and cash—gestures typically meant to gain favor.
Chairman Wontumi recounted that this unnamed candidate sought his support in challenging the incumbent MP for Ashanti Bekwai, Joseph Osei-Owusu, also known as Joe Wise.
“He came to me with a bottle of Schnapp and some money,” Chairman Wontumi claimed, explaining that Nyame asked him to back the candidate’s bid to unseat Joe Wise.
However, Chairman Wontumi said he refused the request and encouraged the candidate to support Joe Wise for the good of the party.
The candidate reportedly refused, opting instead to run as an independent—a decision Chairman Wontumi interprets as part of a broader effort allegedly orchestrated by the NDC to fracture the NPP’s base.
These claims add fuel to ongoing tensions within Ghana’s political landscape as the country approaches election season, with each party seeking to consolidate its support in key regions.
