John Mahama Promises One Week of Paternity Leave for Married Men

The presidential candidate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, has pledged to introduce one week of paternity leave for married men if elected in the upcoming general elections.

This policy, aimed at supporting family life, will allow fathers to spend quality time with their wives and newborns during the crucial first week after childbirth.

Mahama’s promise to grant paternity leave is part of a broader agenda to promote family welfare and gender equality in Ghana.

Speaking at a recent campaign event, he emphasized the importance of fatherly presence in the early days of a child’s life, noting that it not only strengthens family bonds but also helps in supporting mothers as they recover from childbirth.

“The first week after childbirth is a critical time for both mother and baby, and the father’s presence can make a significant difference. We will ensure that married men are granted one week of paternity leave to spend with their wives during this important period,” Mahama said.

Currently, paternity leave is not widely recognized in Ghana, with most focus placed on maternity leave for new mothers. Mahama’s proposal marks a shift toward acknowledging the role of fathers in early childcare, promoting shared responsibilities in the home, and encouraging the involvement of men in nurturing their families.

The promise has been met with positive reactions from various family advocacy groups, who have long called for policies that recognize the importance of fathers in early child development. If implemented, this policy could be a step forward in ensuring that both parents have the opportunity to participate in the early stages of their child’s upbringing.

Mahama’s proposal is expected to appeal to many young families as part of his broader vision to modernize social and family policies in Ghana. With the election drawing near, his campaign continues to roll out policies focused on improving the well-being of families, women, and children across the country.
