A mother in Kakamega County drowned her children before throwing herself in River Nzoia at Makutano area in Kakamega County on the night of Monday, July 6.

A correspondent at the scene of the incident told Kenyans.co.ke that the 24-year-old woman identified as Winnie had committed the act at around 9 p.m. after falling out with her husband over a text message.

Another audio clip of the intermediary between the two disclosed that one of the three children survived after she was saved in time while the bodies of the other three are yet to be found.

“Her husband came to take her but they quarreled over a text message. The husband wanted Winnie to explain the message but she was not ready.

“I later told the man to leave and return after Winnie had calmed down,” she narrated.

Police had not arrived at the scene of the incident.

In a separate clip, the daughter who survived the incident painted a picture of how her mother had lured her together with her brother and sister to the River and pushed them in.

“Mum lied to us that she was taking us to a shop and she took us to River Nzoia and told us to close our eyes. It was me and my brother and sister,” she narrated.

She managed to save herself after clutching on a stick.

This expounds on increasing domestic violence cases since the curfew was instituted by President Uhuru Kenyatta in an attempt to curb the spread of the Covid-19 virus.

In January, a man, Mwanza Kaloki, was under Machakos police’s radar for hacking his mother and niece to death after allegedly quarreling over a meal of eggs and Ugali.

“They had deep cuts on the head. My daughter was still breathing when I arrived. She was lying in my house’s corridor. I carried her and took her outside the house and laid her in our compound,” stated Kaloki’s brother Alfred Mbithi.

In an earlier address, Health Chief Administration Secretary, Mercy Mwangagi, warned domestic violence perpetrators that the state was turning its gaze on them.

“We want to remind everyone that the law has not been suspended and that it will catch up with those who mete violence on others during this period,” Mwangangi warned.
