My Introduction Of Degitilization To Ghanaians Have Addressed All Their Economic Challenges — Bawumia

Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer, has addressed recent criticisms from the opposition, particularly from the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and its leader, John Dramani Mahama, who accuse him of sidelining economic issues in favor of a digitalization agenda.

Responding to these claims, Bawumia emphasized that his focus on digital initiatives is a central component of his economic strategy for Ghana. He asserted that digital solutions, including the newly launched National Credit Scoring System, are integral to his vision of addressing Ghana’s financial challenges.

The National Credit Scoring System, he explained, will assess individual creditworthiness using digital data, expanding access to financial services for Ghanaians and promoting economic inclusion.

At the system’s launch, Bawumia underscored that digital transformation is an essential economic policy tool aimed at dismantling barriers such as limited credit access, lack of transparency, and low financial inclusion, all of which he sees as crucial to Ghana’s sustainable growth.

Bawumia argued that digital tools are not merely technological upgrades but are part of creating an equitable and efficient economic system that benefits all Ghanaians.

He pointed to the success of mobile money interoperability, a system that enables seamless money transfers across different mobile networks, as evidence of how digitalization can improve financial access and inclusion, especially for those without traditional banking options.

Defending his approach, Bawumia stated, “When I was pushing for the implementation of these projects, many people said I had abandoned economics to pursue digitalization. They did not understand that I was just using digitalization to solve economic problems.”

He recalled a statement from 2017, in which he predicted that mobile money interoperability would eventually allow every Ghanaian to access a bank account. “When I said that, many people did not understand it.

They even made jokes about it. They did not think it was possible. But today we have made it possible,” Bawumia said, underscoring the tangible impact of his digitalization efforts on the economy.

Through initiatives like these, Bawumia aims to establish a foundation that not only modernizes but also strengthens Ghana’s economic framework, bringing practical improvements to the daily lives of citizens across the country.
