The Minister-Designate for Communications, Digital Technology, and Innovation, Sam Nartey George, has announced plans to implement a new SIM card registration process, addressing the issues encountered during the previous exercise in 2022.
The previous government’s SIM card re-registration process was marred by long queues and inefficiencies, with cardholders required to visit various NMO offices to link their SIM cards with their Ghana Cards.
Failure to comply resulted in SIM card blockages or the withdrawal of essential services.
During his vetting by Parliament’s Appointments Committee, Sam George criticized the previous government’s approach, stating that it was “wickedness to the highest order” to subject Ghanaians to long hours of queuing, taking away productive man-hours and affecting the economy.
Sam George assured the committee that, under his leadership, the new SIM registration exercise would be more efficient and streamlined.

Leveraging technology, the new process will cross-reference data with the National Identification Authority (NIA) database, eliminating the need for long queues and simplifying the process for Ghanaians.
“The MNOs hold a certain set of dates. We will use technology to cross-reference that against the NIA’s database and all biometric databases. Only instances where there is a disparity would require you to visit an MNO shop,” Sam George explained.
The new process aims to ensure that telcos can verify the identity of SIM card holders, which is currently not possible. George emphasized that this is in the best interest of both the telcos and the consumers.
With the new SIM registration process, Ghanaians can expect a more efficient and streamlined experience, eliminating the need for long queues and unnecessary bureaucratic hurdles.
