Release #StopGalamseynow Protesters immediately – GJA President demands

Albert Kwabena Dwumfour, President of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA), has called for the immediate release of the Democracy Hub protesters, who were remanded following clashes with the police during a three-day protest.

The peaceful demonstration, which took place between September 21-23, turned violent when demonstrators allegedly blocked roads, dismantled police barriers, and damaged property at Accra’s 37 Roundabout.

Dwumfour commended the Ghana Police Service for their professionalism but condemned the excesses, stating that detaining the protesters for two weeks is excessive and infringes on their human rights.

He urged the Akufo-Addo government, the judiciary, and the police to take swift action in securing their release.

Currently, 54 protesters remain in custody, with defense lawyers pushing for bail, while the prosecution insists they are receiving adequate care.

The protesters’ next court appearance is scheduled for October 8, leaving many to await the government’s response to growing public calls for their release.
