A JoyNews reporter was reportedly assaulted on the premises of the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) as tensions escalated following the arrest of NPP Ashanti Regional Chairman, Bernard Antwi-Boasiako, widely known as Chairman Wontumi.
The incident occurred amid a charged atmosphere as dozens of party sympathizers stormed EOCO’s Accra headquarters in protest of Wontumi’s detention.
Eyewitnesses say the journalist was attacked while covering the gathering, raising serious concerns about press freedom and journalist safety in Ghana.

Chairman Wontumi was arrested shortly after being questioned at the CID headquarters regarding alleged involvement in illegal mining within protected forest reserves.
His supporters, chanting and waving party flags, demanded his immediate release, accusing state agencies of political persecution.
EOCO has yet to release an official statement on the assault, though the Ghana Journalists Association has condemned the act and called for immediate investigation.
As of now, Wontumi remains in EOCO custody, with his legal fate hanging in the balance.
