In a historic moment for Ghana, Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang has been elected as the country’s first-ever female Vice President.

This groundbreaking achievement marks a significant milestone in Ghana’s political history, shattering glass ceilings and inspiring hope for greater representation and equality in leadership.

In her first address since the election, Prof. Opoku-Agyemang issued a rallying call to supporters of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), urging them to prepare for the immense task ahead.

With a tone of determination and optimism, she emphasized the need for collective effort to achieve the party’s vision for a prosperous and inclusive Ghana.

“The journey is over; the work is about to begin,” she declared on December 9, marking the end of a challenging campaign and the dawn of a new era in Ghanaian politics. Prof. Opoku-Agyemang’s victory is celebrated not only by the NDC but by all Ghanaians, particularly women, youth, and mothers.

As she prepares to take office, Prof. Opoku-Agyemang has pledged to use her position to champion inclusivity and empowerment, promising to pave the way for others. “I will hold the door open, ensuring others can wish to travel through that door. This position is not just about me, it is a position that empowers others,” she said.

A renowned academic and politician, Prof. Opoku-Agyemang has had a distinguished career, serving as Minister for Education from 2013 to 2017 and as Vice-Chancellor of the University of Cape Coast from 2008 to 2012.

Her commitment to education and empowerment has earned her numerous awards and recognition, including honorary degrees from the University of West Indies and Winston-Salem University.

As Ghana looks to the future, Prof. Opoku-Agyemang’s election offers a beacon of hope for a more inclusive and prosperous nation. Her leadership is expected to inspire a new generation of women and girls to take on leadership roles and challenge the status quo.

In her concluding remarks, Prof. Opoku-Agyemang offered a heartfelt prayer for the nation’s prosperity and for future generations. “I wish blessings on our country, on our children, on those here and yet to be born,” she declared, inspiring hope and unity.
