Tensions ran high at a polling station in Asene Akroso, Eastern Region, on December 5, 2024, during the Special Voting exercise.

The chaos unfolded when Eric Ahinakwa, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Parliamentary Candidate for Asene Akroso Manso, accused Sampson Kwadwo Effah, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) constituency chairman, of engaging in voter bribery by distributing money near the polling station.

A widely circulated video shows Ahinakwa confronting Effah in a heated exchange, with both sides trading harsh words. The confrontation escalated until a police officer stepped in to de-escalate the situation.

The Special Voting exercise in the Eastern and Western regions was initially scheduled for December 2 but was postponed due to the discovery of a defaced ballot paper outside the Checkpoint Printing House.

The Electoral Commission (EC) announced the rescheduling, citing concerns over the integrity of the ballot materials.

The EC has assured stakeholders of the highest standards of transparency and integrity, noting the importance of adhering to established voting guidelines.

However, the incident at Asene Akroso has raised concerns about the potential for electoral misconduct and the need for vigilance in ensuring the integrity of the electoral process.
