Yvonne Chaka Chaka, the iconic South African musician known as the “Princess of Africa,” is calling on President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to take action against illegal mining, or galamsey, in Ghana.
She’s concerned about the devastating impact of galamsey on the youth, noting that it’s a problem that affects not just Ghana, but also her home country of South Africa.
During an interview on the Citi Breakfast Show on October 4, Yvonne Chaka Chaka emphasized that the Ghanaian government needs to tackle galamsey effectively to restore the country’s lost forest cover and rehabilitate destroyed lands.
She’s set to formally appeal to President Akufo-Addo at the upcoming Global Citizen meeting in Ivory Coast, urging him to prioritize the fight against galamsey.

Yvonne Chaka Chaka’s message is clear: “We cannot afford to see young people suffering. We need President Akufo-Addo to walk the talk and ensure that these minerals benefit everyone, and that everyone has access to clean water.”
She believes that the solutions to this problem are already available, and it’s time for the government to listen to the people and take action.
As President of Ghana since 2017, Akufo-Addo has faced various challenges, including economic struggles and corruption.
