A devastating incident in Ejura has sparked widespread outrage and destruction, as angry youths took to the streets to vent their frustration.
The chaos erupted after a young man, arrested for purchasing a stolen phone, tragically died while in police custody.
According to eyewitnesses, the police allegedly moved the deceased’s body to the mortuary without notifying his family. Upon learning of the young man’s death, the community’s youths mobilized and stormed the police station, seeking justice and accountability.
In an act of retaliation, the youths set the police station, nearby cars, and the police bungalow ablaze. The rioters also broke into the cells, releasing all detainees.
The destruction was widespread, with photos showing the charred remains of the police station and surrounding property.
The incident has raised serious concerns about police accountability and the treatment of suspects in custody. The Ghana Police Service has faced criticism in the past for alleged human rights abuses and mistreatment of detainees.
As the community struggles to come to terms with the young man’s death, many are calling for a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding his demise.
