President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has assured Ghanaians that the era of power outages, popularly known as “Dumsor,” will soon be a thing of the past.
Addressing the recent power challenges, the President explained that the disruptions were caused by a gas supply issue, not financial constraints, but managerial inefficiencies.
According to President Akufo-Addo, measures have been taken to restore stability in the power sector. “The Sunon Asogli Thermal Power Station, which was shut down some months ago, has resumed operations.
Today, we can confidently assure the country of an uninterrupted power supply. Management is now secured and stable,” he stated.
The Sunon Asogli Power (Ghana) Limited recently restarted its 560 MW power plant after interventions by Finance Minister Mohammed Amin Adam and Energy Minister Herbert Krapa.
The ministers facilitated the release of emergency funds to address the company’s operational challenges.
The power plant ceased operations in October 2024 due to the Electricity Company of Ghana’s (ECG) inability to settle outstanding payments, which had left Sunon Asogli financially strained. By September 2024, the ECG owed the power company $259 million (excluding fuel costs).
President Akufo-Addo’s reassurance signals a positive development for Ghanaians, who have long called for a permanent resolution to the nation’s recurring energy crises. This move is expected to bring relief to households and businesses that have been affected by the power outages.
