52 Galamsey Protesters Granted Bail, But Lead Convener Still Detained

Out of the 53 protesters arrested during the recent Galamsey demonstrations in Ghana, 52 have been granted bail, leaving only Oliver Barker-Vormawor, the lead convener, in detention.

Bail conditions for the released individuals range between GH₵20,000 to GH₵70,000.00, with some required to report to the police periodically and secure sureties.

This legal development follows protests against illegal mining, or Galamsey, which has led to severe environmental degradation across the country.

Despite the bail, the continued detention of Barker-Vormawor has sparked further debate, with many questioning the authorities’ approach.

Online discussions reveal growing public support for the protesters, with calls for the government to focus more on tackling Galamsey than penalizing demonstrators.

The case remains a focal point for national discussions on environmental protection and citizens’ rights to protest.
