Tears as High School Student jailed 14 years for Gh¢59K electrical cable theft

A Senior High School student, Mohammed Maazu Gariba has been handed 14-year prison term from the Koforidua Circuit Court for stealing electrical wires valued at Ghc 59,000.00.

The prosecutor revealed that Gariba, an ex-convict, was captured on November 19, 2023, at Akyem Anyinasin after targeting a newly constructed two-story building. His method involved extracting all the electrical wires, burning them to retrieve copper, and attempting to hide the stolen goods in a nearby bush.

Unfortunately, his attempt to retrieve the wires led to his arrest by vigilant individuals who handed him over to the police.

Notably, Gariba had a previous conviction for a similar cable theft in 2020, receiving a 23-month sentence from the Akyem Tafo Magistrate Court.

Given his recurrent criminal activities, the Koforidua Circuit Court imposed a heightened 14-year sentence on the young student, highlighting the escalating severity of crimes committed by high school students.
