On September 21, 2024, Accra witnessed large-scale protests against Galamsey (illegal mining), spearheaded by the Democracy Hub and other civic groups under the hashtag #OccupyJulorbiHouse.
The demonstrators are voicing their frustration over the government’s failure to tackle the environmental devastation caused by Galamsey, particularly the pollution of water bodies like the Pra River.
Despite a High Court injunction preventing protests near Jubilee House, demonstrations continued, with symbolic acts such as the burning of political paraphernalia at key locations like the 37 Roundabout.
Protesters, including an elderly woman displaying polluted river water, expressed deep concern for the future of Ghana’s natural resources.
The Ghana Police Service intervened, but the protesters remained resolute, demanding immediate and concrete government action. On social media, particularly X, citizens are calling for the revocation of mining licenses linked to Galamsey, urging politicians to go beyond rhetoric.
With media coverage amplifying the issue, pressure mounts on the government to respond decisively to the ongoing environmental crisis.
