BREAK: Traders In Accra To Close Shops On Saturday Over Ga Manye Funeral Rites

In order to accommodate the final funeral rites of the late Ga Manye, Naa Dedei Omaedru III, all stores and offices in Accra’s Central Business District are to be closed on Saturday, October 28, 2023, per the directive of the Ga Traditional Council.

To honor the late Paramount Queen mother of the Ga State, all other small businesses and residences in the capital are obliged to keep their doors locked on the designated day.

The Funeral Planning Committee announced on October 10 that “the Ga Traditional Council has determined that shops and markets within Accra should be closed on Saturday the 28th October, 2023, only, and not from the 26th October to the 29th October, 2023, to the 31st October, as previously announced.”

The statement was signed by the Sempe Mantse and Chairman of the Central Funeral Planning Committee, Nii Adote Otintor II.

On Saturday, October 28, 2023, however, chemists and business owners selling fish and Ga Kenkey are allowed to open for business.

Commencing on October 23, the week-long funeral rites for Naa Dedei Omaedru III are scheduled to conclude on Sunday, October 29, 2023.

The Funeral Planning Committee had previously announced that “all funerals shall be on hold from October 15th to October 30th, 2023” because of the queenmother’s week-long funeral arrangements.

“Traditional rites or rituals leading to enstoolment, installation, or induction into any traditional office shall not be performed.”

The committee was also instructed by the council to “drape all Accra markets in the traditional funeral colours of red and black.”

Additionally, the council declared that solemnity in the traditional jurisdiction will be strictly enforced from October 25 to October 29 while the Queen is laid in state prior to her final departure.

The queen’s remains would be prepared to lie in state on Thursday, October 26.

A pre-burial service is scheduled to take place at the Ga Traditional Council on Friday, October 27, following the body’s arrival.

There would be a burial and funeral service at the Ga Traditional Council on Saturday, October 28 at 8 a.m.

Holy Trinity Anglican Cathedral in Accra will host a service of thanksgiving on Sunday, October 29.

On December 26, 2022, Manye Naa Dedei Omaedru III passed away.

As the Ga Manye, she was installed as the Ga Manye in 1963 when she was 29 and served for 59 years
