Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the flagbearer of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP), has pledged to provide a living allowance to the Chieftaincy institution if he wins the 2024 election.
During his tour of the Greater Accra Region, Dr. Bawumia addressed the Greater Accra Regional House of Chiefs, emphasizing that the allowance would enhance the effectiveness of the Chieftaincy institution.
“To enable the Chieftaincy institution to fulfill its proper role, it must be financially resourced. You cannot assign responsibilities without providing the necessary resources,” Dr. Bawumia stated.
He highlighted that paramount chiefs currently receive GH₵1,000 a month, which he noted is insufficient even for basic expenses like petrol to attend meetings. He pointed out the lack of financial support for queen mothers and divisional chiefs.
“We need to provide living allowances to paramount chiefs, divisional chiefs, and queen mothers. By doing this, the Chieftaincy institution will be empowered to make decisions that benefit the government,” Dr. Bawumia added.
Dr. Bawumia’s proposal to support the Chieftaincy institution reflects his recognition of its crucial role in governance and community development. The proposed allowances aim to strengthen the institution, enabling it to contribute more effectively to national progress.
