Chaos Erupts In Parliament Between NPP And NDC Members Over Vetting Of Ministerial Nominees

A heated disagreement between Minority and Majority MPs on the Appointments Committee turned chaotic yesterday, January 30, as the two factions clashed over the vetting of Kwabena Mintah Akandoh and Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa.

The controversy began when the Minority proposed rescheduling the vetting to today, Friday, January 31, citing concerns over the day’s proceedings. However, the Majority rejected this suggestion, insisting that the vetting should continue as scheduled.

As tensions escalated, Minority members disrupted the session by breaking tables and microphones in an effort to prevent any delay.

Despite the chaos, the Majority stood firm, arguing that the committee was following its established schedule and that the vetting should proceed without interruption.

The situation prompted a heightened security presence in the conference room as tensions mounted.

The Minority held firm in its stance, insisting that no further nominees should be vetted, pointing out that an agreement had been made to vet just four nominees and adjourn for the day.

Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin accused the Clerk of Parliament, Gifty Jiagge-Gobah, of being partisan and working in favor of the National Democratic Congress (NDC). He claimed that the Clerk had unilaterally advertised the vetting schedule without prior agreement.

The chaos eventually forced the Majority leader, Mahama Ayariga, to suspend the vetting and announce that the session would resume at the Speaker’s conference room today.

The vetting of Akandoh and Ablakwa is expected to continue today, with the Minority vowing to press on with their questioning of the nominees.

The standoff has raised concerns about the ability of the Appointments Committee to function smoothly and has highlighted the deepening divisions between the Minority and Majority caucuses.
