Difference between US Green Card and US citizenship

A recent online discourse surrounding the Green Card has sparked a much-needed conversation about its role and implications.

While the Green Card grants individuals permanent residence in the United States, it’s important to note that it does not confer US citizenship.

Holders of the Green Card enjoy numerous rights and benefits, including the ability to live and work in the US permanently, but they are not entitled to vote, hold public office, or travel abroad for extended periods.

The distinction between a Green Card and citizenship is often misunderstood, with some assuming the former automatically leads to the latter.

To clarify, converting a Green Card into citizenship requires a 5-year residency in the US, with no more than 6 months spent outside the country.
