Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh's Verbal Slip About Prof. John Evans Atta-Mills Sparks Controversy

Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, the recently announced running mate for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has found himself at the center of controversy following a verbal misstep during a recent NPP women’s conference.

The incident, captured on video and now circulating widely online, has raised eyebrows and sparked discussions about political decorum and respect for former leaders.

In his address, Dr. Prempeh was acknowledging the contributions of Ghana’s past presidents when he stumbled over the name of the late former President Prof. John Evans Atta-Mills.

The video shows him saying, “Dr Hilla Limann did his part, Dr Rawlings did his part, Dr John Agyekum Kuffour did his part, Dr… the one who died – Dr Atta-Mills did his part in building Ghana…”

This momentary lapse, particularly the phrase “the one who died,” has been interpreted by many as disrespectful to the memory of Prof. Atta-Mills. The incident has quickly gained traction on social media platforms, with many Ghanaians expressing disappointment and calling for more respectful treatment of former leaders, regardless of political affiliations.

The slip-up is particularly noteworthy given Dr. Prempeh’s recent elevation to the role of NPP running mate, a position that places him under increased public scrutiny.

As the video continues to circulate, it has reignited discussions about the importance of political etiquette and the need for leaders to be mindful of their words, especially when referring to respected national figures.
