The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has unveiled a groundbreaking proposal to waive academic fees for first-year students in public tertiary institutions, should they secure victory in Ghana’s 2024 elections.
This ambitious policy, projected to cost between ₵275-300 million annually, aims to benefit an estimated 113,000 students across the country.
The announcement has ignited intense discussions nationwide, with supporters hailing it as a progressive step towards accessible higher education, while critics raise concerns about its financial viability and long-term sustainability.
The proposal is seen by many as a natural extension of the existing free Senior High School (SHS) policy, potentially easing the transition from secondary to tertiary education for many Ghanaian youths.
However, skeptics are calling for more detailed funding strategies and implementation plans, questioning how the initiative will be financed without compromising other sectors of the economy.
The NDC’s manifesto launch also introduced other youth-focused promises, including job creation initiatives and a dedicated ministry for youth development, indicating a comprehensive approach to addressing youth concerns.
