Small-scale miners in Amenfi East have staged a protest against an upcoming demonstration organized by Organized Labor, which aims to curb illegal mining activities, locally known as “galamsey.”
Dressed in black and red, the miners took to the streets to voice their concerns, arguing that the planned crackdown threatens their livelihoods.
The atmosphere was charged with emotion, as some elderly women were seen in tears, fearing that a halt to galamsey would cut off their primary source of income.

This protest sheds light on the complex nature of the galamsey issue, which, despite its harmful impact on the environment, provides a crucial means of survival for many families in the region.
Organized Labor’s demonstration, set for October 10, 2024, is intended to urge the government to take stronger measures against illegal mining.
