Ghana’s Parliament was adjourned indefinitely on November 7, 2024, following the unexpected absence of New Patriotic Party (NPP) members during a session that was initially convened at their own request.
Speaker Alban Sumana Bagbin announced the adjournment due to a lack of parliamentary business, as NPP lawmakers did not attend. This indefinite adjournment is the second instance in recent weeks, the first having occurred on October 22.
NPP sources, including Kennedy Agyapong, attributed the absence to an internal meeting that extended unexpectedly, though some speculate it may be a strategic political maneuver.
This development comes after a Supreme Court ruling that blocked the Speaker’s decision to vacate four seats over MPs’ political realignments.
The adjournment could delay critical government business, including budget approvals essential for operations in the lead-up to the December elections.
Both political parties, NPP and NDC, appear to be positioning strategically, adding tension as the election season intensifies.
