How A Pastor Abused His Wife & Son, Traumatizing Him For Years

Jewell King-Speaks, a young Ghanaian poet has narrated the ordeal of witnessing his mother being abused for numerous years by his father, a pastor. The years of abuse would scar him for a very long time and lead to him championing the campaign against child abuse.

Speaking on Joy Prime’s morning show to host Emefa Adeti, he explained that the experience made his childhood quite traumatic, even affecting his performance at school. He would refuse to answer questions at school because he was raised to be submissive and not question authority.

“Growing up, anytime you did something wrong, there would be punishment. And my mum was an example of that. Anytime she did something wrong, she’d suffer the consequences from my father. Mostly it begins with just an argument and then punches follow. And because of that, it was difficult for me to answer questions in class, I found it hard to be outspoken because I thought that when I go wrong, I’ll be beaten” He said.

“My dad was very aggressive and strong so my siblings and I couldn’t do anything to stop him. We would just watch him beat my mum until he gets tired. My dad was a pastor too, but he’d beat us and go to Sunday church like nothing was wrong, even though people knew what we were going through…”

Now building his career in poetry, Jewell’s childhood experience has led him to channel his pain into words. His poems contain verses about domestic violence and abuse, which he champions the cause against.
