I bought 7 Sprinter Buses In 1 Week From Galamsey Earnings — Galamseyer reveals

A small-scale illegal miner, known as a galamseyer, has made stunning revelations about the wealth he’s accumulated from galamsey, Ghana’s illegal mining activities.

In an interview on Ultimate Breakfast Show, he shared that he bought seven Mercedes Benz Sprinter buses with just one week’s earnings from galamsey. To put that into perspective, one Sprinter Bus cost GH¢80,000 in 2014.

The miner, who chose to remain anonymous, attributed his immense wealth to the lucrative nature of galamsey. He noted that his workers could have earned even more if not for the fear of arrest by security services.

He also pointed out that politicians, wealthy businessmen, religious leaders, and other influential individuals are involved in this illegal business, which has devastated Ghana’s rivers and forests.

The miner alleged that chiefs, supposed stewards of traditional lands, are complicit in the destruction. They sell lands and prevent reclamation, allowing ongoing mining.

The galamseyer criticized the common narrative that Chinese excavators are solely responsible for the environmental damage.

He expressed skepticism about resolving the galamsey issue, stating, “Miners will continue to mine until the world draws to an end.” This highlights the complexity and entrenched nature of the problem.
