Iranian President and Foreign Minister Killed in Helicopter Crash

Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi, the country’s foreign minister, and others were found dead at the site of a helicopter crash after an hours-long search through a foggy, mountainous region of the country’s northwest.

The helicopter crashed in a sudden, intense fog in a mountainous terrain in Iran’s East Azerbaijan province.

The Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who has the final say in the Shiite theocracy, quickly named a little-known vice president as caretaker and insisted the government was in control.

The deaths of the two leaders have left the Islamic Republic without two key leaders as tensions rise in the Middle East.

The cause of the crash is still unknown. State TV gave no immediate cause for the crash in Iran’s East Azerbaijan province.
