
<p class="has-medium-font-size"><strong>In a move that is set to revive a contentious debate, Finance Minister-Designate, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, has confirmed that the National Democratic Congress (NDC)-led government will reintroduce road tolls in Ghana.</strong></p>



<p>This decision is in line with the party&#8217;s 2024 manifesto and marks a significant reversal of the previous government&#8217;s policy.</p>



<p>Speaking during his vetting session before the Appointments Committee of Parliament on Monday, January 13, 2025, Ato Forson emphasized that the NDC remains committed to its promise to bring back road tolls.</p>

<p>He noted that the previous government, led by former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, had removed the road toll but later signaled its intention to reintroduce it.</p>



<p>Ato Forson assured that the NDC is a party that sticks to its promises and will implement the road toll as a means of raising revenue. This move is likely to generate significant debate, as the abolition of road tolls in 2021 was a contentious issue.</p>



<p>Road tolls were first introduced in Ghana in the early 1990s to generate revenue for road construction and maintenance. However, the Akufo-Addo-led administration justified their abolition by citing inefficiencies and high collection costs.</p>
