The one-week observation of the late Akua Donkor, flagbearer of the Ghana Freedom Party (GFP), was held on Thursday, November 28, 2024, at her hometown, Ejuratia, in the Kwabre East District of the Ashanti Region.
Despite her significant role in Ghanaian politics, the event was surprisingly devoid of top politicians and celebrities.
The family of the late politician had anticipated a significant turnout of notable personalities to pay their respects. However, only a handful of local leaders and supporters of the GFP attended the ceremony.
Notably, Hon. Francisca Oteng Gyasi, Member of Parliament for Kwabre East, and the National Democratic Congress’ Betty Mould Iddrisu were among the few high-profile attendees spotted at the ceremony.
Akua Donkor passed away on Monday, October 28, 2024, at the Ridge Hospital in Accra, following a short illness. She was 83 years old.
The absence of top politicians and celebrities at her one-week observation has sparked a debate online, with many Ghanaians questioning why such a prominent figure was not accorded the respect and recognition she deserved.
The GFP had nominated Kwabena Agyeman Appiah Kubi, popularly known as Roman Fada, as Akua Donkor’s replacement, but he was disqualified by the Electoral Commission, leaving the GFP without a presidential candidate.
