The assertion that Ghana’s Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia is being falsely accused by the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) is no longer a rumor.
This is due to the African Academy for Open-Source Investigations’ (AAOSI) incredibly thorough investigation, which revealed how Sammy Gyamfi, the NDC’s national communications officer, and some dishonest insiders linked to the main opposition party have been organizing politically fabricated tweets intended to discredit the Vice President.
The investigation looked at the reasons behind Vice President Bawumia being called a liar and using the hashtag “#Bawuliar” to create false trends on Twitter. It was conducted as part of the AAOSI’s efforts to fight misinformation and strengthen democracy in Africa.
It also showed that the NDC had used the derogatory characterization of Vice President Bawumia as a liar as a deliberate strategy to undermine his character whenever he discussed the economy or gave a significant speech.
Almost every economic comment the Vice President made was met with a spike in #Bawuliar tweets, as we saw during the probe. The goal of this analysis is to determine whether Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s popularity on social media is organic or the result of his opponents’ calculated efforts to damage his reputation.
The research also looked at the top 10 accounts with the most original #Bawuliar tweets, the top 10 Twitter accounts that retweeted the #Bawuliar tweets, the top 10 Twitter accounts that amplified the fake trend, the top 10 Twitter accounts that had the most retweets of their tweets, and the origin and major players of the staged hashtag “Bawuliar.”
Our research discovered that the Twitter accounts @sammygyamfi2017 and @SammyGyamfi_ both belong to Sammy Gyamfi, the National Democratic Congress’s (NDC’s) head of communications. As a result, the account’s username was modified from @sammygyamfi2017 to @SammyGyamfi_. The investigations further revealed that this was supported by archived copies of tweets from the account from when its username was @sammygyamfi2017.
