Ghana Annulled MPs-Elect Swearing-In Decision

BREAK: Speaker Bagbin Rules Annulled MPs-Elect Ineligible for January Swearing-In

Ghana’s Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, has ruled that MPs-elect from constituencies whose election results were annulled by the Supreme Court cannot be sworn in on January 6, 2025.

This decision follows the Supreme Court’s December 27, 2024, nullifying results from Okaikwei Central, Ablekuma North, Tema Central, and Techiman South due to procedural irregularities.

Speaker Bagbin emphasized that to officially become MPs, candidates must be elected, declared by the Electoral Commission (EC), and sworn in by the Speaker.

He stated that the annulment invalidates their eligibility, describing himself as the “gatekeeper” ensuring adherence to legal processes. The decision aims to safeguard the integrity of Ghana’s democratic system while sparking robust public discourse about its implications.

Social media platforms, including X, have seen mixed reactions, with some lauding the move as a defense of electoral integrity, while others express concerns about representation gaps for the affected constituencies.

The decision underscores the delicate interplay between judicial oversight and legislative processes in Ghana’s democracy.
