Dela, a communicator for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has sparked public outrage following derogatory comments about former President John Agyekum Kufour’s disability.
Speaking on Accra-based TV XYZ, Dela criticized President Kufour for endorsing Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, expressing his displeasure in remarks deemed offensive and disrespectful toward persons living with disabilities.
“Let me say something to President Kufour. He should be careful. I expect him to stay in his lane and enjoy his retirement with the riches he had from being president. He is in a wheelchair as payment for his sins as president,” Dela stated.
Despite being prompted to retract his comments during the show, Dela stood by his remarks, claiming there was nothing wrong with referencing the former president’s use of a wheelchair.
The remarks have been widely condemned by the public and disability advocacy groups, who view them as an attack on the dignity of individuals with disabilities.
Many have called on the NDC to address the incident and ensure respect for all, irrespective of physical condition or political differences.
