A disturbing video has surfaced, showing two men in military uniform allegedly accepting bribes from illegal miners, known as “galamseyers,” in exchange for allowing their mining activities to continue.

This revelation has sparked outrage and raised serious concerns about the integrity of Ghana’s efforts to combat illegal mining.

The footage, captured on-site at an illegal mining operation, shows a miner accusing the soldiers of collecting “chop money” – a Ghanaian slang term for bribes.

The miner’s statement, “We’re on site; two soldiers came for ‘chop money’ and are leaving. You said you’d stop galamsey,” implies that some security personnel are turning a blind eye to these activities in exchange for bribes.

Galamsey has long plagued Ghana, causing severe environmental degradation, especially in water bodies and farmlands.

Despite government assurances and military involvement, corruption allegations within the security forces have undermined efforts to combat illegal mining.

The video has prompted widespread calls for an investigation and swift action to address corruption within the security forces. Many are demanding accountability and urgent action to protect Ghana’s environment and natural resources.
