University Lecturer Collapses & Dies Day Before Major Milestone
Maseno University fraternity was on Monday, August 17, thrown into mourning following the sudden death of one of the institution’s lecturers.
A family friend confirmed to Kenyans.co.ke that the lecturer, Jaspher Otieno, died on Monday afternoon while watching heated proceedings at the Senate.
The lecturer had been scheduled to defend his Ph.D. thesis on Tuesday, August 18.
The institution’s Public Relations office confirmed that the lecturer passed away in his home in Nairobi.
“We are mourning a great lecturer who had so much zeal for his work,” Maseno University Public Relations Officer Owen Onyango told Daily Nation.
The University’s Vice-Chancellor Julius Nyabundi noted that the news of the lecturer’s death was shocking and sent a message of condolence to his family.
Jasper had worked as a lecturer at Kenya Polytechnic before it was later transformed to the Technical University of Kenya before moving to Maseno.
He joined Maseno in 2013 where he initially worked as a lecturer in the communications and media department.
He later rose the ranks and served as the institution’s public relations director in 2016.
Maseno communications and media technology lecturer George Ojuondo eulogized the deceased as a hardworking and honest individual.
“I got the news of his death at around 3 o’clock. I have lost a hardworking, honest, and active colleague,” he stated.
He left two wives and three children.
