Wontumi TV Presenter Arrested for Misinforming Public About Ghana’s Election Process

The Ghana Police have arrested Oheneba Nana Asiedu, a presenter with Wontumi TV/Radio, for spreading false information regarding the Electoral Commission’s (EC) election plans.

During a broadcast, Oheneba falsely claimed that the EC intended to split voting into two days, with candidates numbered 1 to 7 on the ballot being voted for on December 7 and numbers 8 to 13 on the following day.

This misinformation shared widely in a viral video, caused public confusion and alarm about the integrity of the upcoming elections.

The Electoral Commission has since refuted the claims, reaffirming its commitment to a single-day voting process as stipulated by law.

The police described Oheneba’s actions as deliberate and a threat to public trust in the electoral system.

They have urged media practitioners to verify information before broadcasting, especially on sensitive national issues.

Oheneba is expected to face charges, as his arrest underscores the government’s zero-tolerance policy for election-related misinformation.

The police have also encouraged the public to seek credible information from official sources to avoid falling prey to misleading narratives.
