In the latest crackdown on illegal mining, five individuals were arrested during an operation on the Birim River to curb Galamsey activities.
The newly formed government task force also destroyed 40 changfans (illegal mining equipment), dealing a significant blow to the mining operations along the river. This comes just days after the same group of illegal miners had been pushed out of the region by authorities.
During the arrests, a local chief, reportedly from Mampong, confronted the task force, claiming ownership of the mining concession and questioning why his property was being destroyed.
The chief, whose name has not been released, arrived on the scene in a taxi, disrupting the operation momentarily.
Despite the intervention, the task force continued its mission to dismantle the illegal mining infrastructure.
This incident highlights the persistent challenges in the fight against Galamsey and the involvement of influential figures in protecting these illicit activities.
