The Government of Kenya is set to receive Ksh 6 billion from the World Bank in funding to address the Coronavirus (COVID-19) cases in the country.

This announcement was made through the World Bank’s social media platform on Monday. The funding will see Ksh 5 billion come from COVID-19 Financing Facility & Ksh 1 billion from the Contingency Emergency Response component of Transporting Health Systems for Universal Care Project.

The funding comes three days after the country confirmed its first case on Friday. Kenyans have been speculating that the government made the confirmation after the World Health Organization announced its COVID-19 Solidarity Response Fund a day earlier.

The funds were meant to enable the most vulnerable countries to prepare and respond to the crisis.

WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom said the fund was critical in ensuring that the international community comes together to contribute to fighting the pandemic.

President Uhuru Kenyatta has since banned all incoming travels for the next 30 days. All learning institutions have also been ordered to close down due to the recent announcement of two new cases of the coronavirus.
