Court Throws Out Bid to Force President Nana Addo’s Hand on LGBTQ+ Bill

Court Throws Out Bid to Force President's Hand on LGBTQ+ Bill

The Accra High Court dismissed a lawsuit filed by Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor that aimed to force President Nana Akufo-Addo and Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin to act on the controversial LGBTQ+ bill within seven days.

The bill seeks to criminalize LGBTQ+ activities and has faced both opposition and support.

The court’s decision marks a setback for the bill, as it cannot force the President to receive the bill from Parliament for assent or otherwise.

The presidency has said it would not forward the bill to the president for assent until two legal challenges against it were settled, sparking criticism in parliament.

One opposition lawmaker, Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor, took the delay to the high court, which ruled against his challenge.

Justice Ellen Lordina Serwaa Mireku said the court had decided it would be inappropriate to compel Akufo-Addo to act on a bill that faced two pending Supreme Court challenges.
