Flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, has accused the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) of engaging in widespread vote-buying activities ahead of the upcoming elections.
Speaking to supporters during his campaign tour, Mahama alleged that the NPP is using public funds to influence voters.
He encouraged Ghanaians to accept the items being distributed but cautioned them against falling for the tactics, emphasizing that their votes should not be for sale.
“They have stolen a lot of money, and now during the election period, they are using a small fraction of it to buy votes,” Mahama claimed. “I visited Bodi, and the people there told me they were given bentoa [enemas]. But I ask, if you are hungry, how can medicine inserted through the anus help cleanse the system? They are sharing salt, Maggie cubes, buckets, and money, but don’t let these things sway you.”
Mahama stressed that the items being distributed are purchased with public funds and urged voters to take them without compromising their conscience. “Anything they bring to you, take it because it is your money they are using. But remember, you are not a commodity. Don’t sell your conscience to these people,” he said.
The former president’s remarks have ignited debates about the role of money and material incentives in Ghana’s electoral process, with calls for vigilance against such practices.
