Carly Gregg, a 15-year-old from Brandon, Mississippi, has been sentenced to life in prison for the murder of her mother and attempted murder of her stepfather.
The chilling incident occurred on March 19, 2023, when Gregg, then 14, shot her 40-year-old mother, Ashely Smylie, with her own gun before luring her stepfather, Heath Smylie, home using the deceased mother’s phone.
Prosecutors revealed that Gregg planned to ambush and kill her stepfather upon his arrival, but he survived the attack.
Gregg fled the scene but was later apprehended near the family home. While her defense argued she suffered from a mental health crisis and couldn’t remember the events, jurors found her guilty on all charges, including first-degree murder and attempted murder.
Dr. Andrew Clark, a child psychologist, testified about Gregg’s struggles with depression, self-harm, and hearing voices, which had worsened prior to the tragic events.
Despite these factors, the court handed down the life sentence on September 20, 2024.
