A cholera outbreak has been reported in the Ada West and Ada East districts of the Greater Accra region, with nine confirmed cases as of October 11, 2024.
The Ghana Health Service confirmed the first case on October 4, 2024, after a person presented to a health facility with symptoms of vomiting, diarrhea, and abdominal pain following attendance at a funeral in Ada East.
According to the Ghana Health Service, the patient’s condition prompted an immediate response from health authorities, leading to the activation of Public Health Emergency Management Committees (PHEMCs) at all levels.

A joint multi-sectoral Public Health Emergency Rapid Response Team (PHERRT) has been deployed to contain the outbreak, comprising representatives from the National Commission for Civic Education, Ghana Education Service, National Disaster Management Organisation, and Environmental Health Units.
The Ghana Health Service has assured the public of its continuous efforts to promptly detect and respond to public health emergencies.
“We are working tirelessly to contain the outbreak and prevent further spread,” a spokesperson for the Ghana Health Service said.
The public is advised to take precautionary measures, including frequent handwashing, proper sanitation, and safe drinking water practices.
Meanwhile, health officials are conducting contact tracing, environmental assessments, and public education campaigns to mitigate the outbreak.
