Election 2024: Key Ministers Who Lost Their Parliamentary Seats

The December 7 parliamentary elections delivered unexpected outcomes, especially for the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP).

The party suffered significant setbacks, with several of its Members of Parliament, including key figures holding ministerial positions, losing their seats.

One of the most notable upsets occurred in the Adansi Asokwa constituency, where the Minister of Trade and Industry, KT Hammond, lost his seat to the NDC’s Godwin Animli Dorgbadzi Dorani.

Hammond, who had been nominated by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to replace Alan Kyerematen as Minister for Trade and Industry in February 2023, garnered 13,275 votes, while Dorani secured 14,229 votes.

Other notable losses for the NPP include the Minister for the Interior, Henry Quartey, who lost the Ayawaso Central seat to the NDC’s Abdul Rauf Tongym Tubazu, and the Minister of Communications and Digitalisation, Ursula Owusu-Ekuful, who lost the Ablekuma West seat to Rev Kweku Addo.

The NDC’s gains in these constituencies, traditionally seen as NPP strongholds, signal a potential realignment of voter preferences and highlight the dynamic nature of Ghana’s political landscape.

The opposition party’s growing influence in key constituencies is evident in the results, with the NDC winning seats in Adansi Asokwa, Ayawaso Central, Ablekuma West, and Awutu Senya East, among others.

The NPP’s losses also extend to the Sekondi constituency, where Blay Nyameke Armah of the NDC won with 14,558 votes, ousting Tourism Minister Andrew Kofi Egyapa Mercer of the NPP. John Dumelo of the NDC also caused a historic upset in Ayawaso West Wuogon, defeating the Minister for Sanitation and Water Resources, Lydia Alhassan.

As the dust settles on the parliamentary elections, it is clear that the NDC has made significant gains, while the NPP has suffered significant setbacks. The results highlight the shifting dynamics of Ghana’s political landscape and set the stage for a potentially intense presidential election.
